一What Friend actually is
Friend is the same element as your Day Master, with the same polarity — the ten god that is not another person but you, doubled. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.
Your Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar, the stand-in for you in the chart. Friend (Bi Jian 比肩) is the label for a stem elsewhere in the chart that is the same element as your Day Master and the same polarity. Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) and Zi Ping Zhen Quan (子平真诠) treat Friend as an extension of the Day Master itself: useful when the Day Master is weak, a rival for Wealth when the Day Master is strong. The common misreading — “Friend in the chart means loyal friends and good luck with people” — misreads the star because Friend is not other people. It is you, appearing twice. Classical texts describe four configurations of that doubled self, and the rest of this article walks through each one so you can tell which is in your chart.
Where the ten gods come from
Every stem in a chart receives one of the ten god labels once it is compared with your Day Master. The labels come from two questions only.
The first question is relation: what does the other stem’s element do to your element? There are five possible relations: same element, produces me, I produce, I control, controls me.
To sort those out, Bazi uses two cycles. The production cycle runs Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. The control cycle runs Wood controls Earth, Earth controls Water, Water controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood.
The second question is polarity: is the other stem the same yin/yang quality as yours? Yang stems are Jia 甲, Bing 丙, Wu 戊, Geng 庚, Ren 壬. Yin stems are Yi 乙, Ding 丁, Ji 己, Xin 辛, Gui 癸.
Five relations times two answers gives ten gods:
| Relation to Day Master | Same polarity | Opposite polarity |
|---|---|---|
| Same element | Friend | Rob Wealth |
| Produces me | Indirect Resource | Direct Resource |
| I produce | Eating God | Hurting Officer |
| I control | Indirect Wealth | Direct Wealth |
| Controls me | Seven Killings | Direct Officer |
Friend is the top-left cell: same element, same polarity. Notice that Friend and Rob Wealth share the same relation to you. They are separated only by polarity. A stem of your own element but the other polarity becomes Rob Wealth; a stem of your own element and your own polarity becomes Friend.
Why the name: shoulder to shoulder
Bi Jian means shoulder to shoulder. The image is a second stem of your exact element and polarity standing beside you in the chart. It does not come at you from outside; it stands with you. That is why Bazi reads Friend for peers, siblings, colleagues and rivals of your own kind — people who resemble you closely enough to stand beside you, and closely enough to want the same things. In a person, Friend shows up as independence, steadiness under load, and loyalty to equals. Unmanaged, it can turn into competitiveness with peers, splitting of resources, and stubbornness.
Your Friend stem, from your Day Master
Because Friend has to match both element and polarity, the only stem that qualifies is your own Day Master stem appearing somewhere else. No other stem can pass both tests.
| Day Master | Friend stem |
|---|---|
| Jia 甲 | Jia 甲 |
| Yi 乙 | Yi 乙 |
| Bing 丙 | Bing 丙 |
| Ding 丁 | Ding 丁 |
| Wu 戊 | Wu 戊 |
| Ji 己 | Ji 己 |
| Geng 庚 | Geng 庚 |
| Xin 辛 | Xin 辛 |
| Ren 壬 | Ren 壬 |
| Gui 癸 | Gui 癸 |
So a Jia Day Master looks for another Jia in the chart. A Yi Day Master looks for another Yi. The search is that direct.
Where a Friend can sit
A Friend can appear in any of the three visible stems: the year pillar’s stem, the month pillar’s stem, or the hour pillar’s stem. The day pillar’s stem is your Day Master, not a second copy, so that seat is excluded.
A Friend can also hide inside an earthly branch. Each branch holds one to three hidden stems: a main qi, a middle qi, and a residual qi. A Friend hidden as main qi is stronger than one hidden as middle or residual qi. The month branch’s main qi is the strongest position in the whole chart, so a Friend sitting there weighs more than a Friend sitting in a distant branch.
When a chart-reading tool totals a Friend, it counts a visible stem as 1.0, a hidden main qi as 1.0, a middle qi as 0.5, and a residual qi as 0.3. Those numbers matter later when you ask whether the Friend is strong enough to support you, compete with you, or sit under control.
二The four kinds of Friend charts
The same star behaves in four different ways depending on what stands next to it.
Friend is the same element and the same polarity as your Day Master. Polarity means whether the stem is yin or yang, so Friend is not merely related to you; it is the same version of the same element. That doubled self is useful, competitive, disciplined, or stuck depending on the neighbors around it.
A few group names keep the configurations short:
- Resource = Direct Resource + Indirect Resource; these are the stars that produce your Day Master.
- Output = Eating God + Hurting Officer; these are the stars your Day Master produces.
- Wealth = Direct Wealth + Indirect Wealth; these are the stars your Day Master controls.
- Control = Direct Officer + Seven Killings; these are the stars that control your Day Master.
- Support for the Day Master = Friend + Rob Wealth + Direct Resource + Indirect Resource.
Use the free calculator to see how strong or thin your Day Master is before reading the four shapes below. Nothing in this article decides that for you.
1. Friend supporting a weak Day Master (比肩帮身)
A Friend in a under-supported chart acts as load-bearing mass.
The arrangement: the Day Master has thin support, meaning there is little Resource while Wealth, Control, or Output is heavy. Resource would rebuild the Day Master, but Resource is scarce. Friend cannot produce the Day Master, because Friend is not a producer; it is the same element. What it adds is weight. The classical reading is that a weak or pressured Day Master can hold its ground when the same element appears a second time.
Mechanically, Wealth asks your element to go out and control things. Output asks your element to spend itself producing the next element. Control presses down on your element. All three can exhaust a Day Master that has little behind it. Friend does not stop the exhaustion. It simply raises the total amount of your element in the chart, so the same pressure no longer cuts as deep.
In behavior, this shape tends to show up as endurance. When a workload or a conflict appears that would make a thinner chart give way, this one keeps standing, sometimes by stubbornly refusing to admit how heavy the load is. The asset is self-reliance and steadiness under pressure. The liability is that a person with this shape can be slow to ask for help, because the doubled self has learned to act as its own backup.
The shape is configuration 1 when the calculator shows thin support and a Friend is present in a visible stem or as a branch hidden stem.
2. Friend competing for Wealth on a strong Day Master (比肩争财)
A Friend becomes a rival when the Day Master is already well supported.
The arrangement: the Day Master has strong support, and a Friend stands openly beside a Wealth star. Wealth is the element your Day Master controls, so it is the natural target of your energy. With two of the same element present, two versions of the same self reach for one Wealth. That is why the classical texts read this shape as competition over money, resources, or a partner, and as losses through peers.
The mechanism is duplication. One Day Master can control a Wealth star and keep the gain as its own result. Add Friend, and the controller count becomes two. Both have the same element and the same polarity, so the Wealth star does not distinguish between them. It is pulled in two directions.
In practical situations, this shape can be useful in a team that shares a goal: two equal people moving the same deal forward can cover more ground than one. But the same deal has to be split. Siblings, colleagues, or rivals of the same kind tend to appear at the point where money or recognition is distributed. The money is earned, but it is rarely kept only by the Day Master.
The shape is configuration 2 when the calculator shows strong Day Master support and a Friend is visible beside Wealth.
3. Friend controlled by Officer or Killings (官杀制比)
Friend stops competing when Control is strong enough to discipline it.
The arrangement: Direct Officer or Seven Killings is present and strong enough to control the Friend. Control is the group of stars whose element controls your Day Master element. Since Friend is the same element as your Day Master, Control controls Friend in exactly the same way. The unruly doubled self is put under a rule.
The mechanism is external structure. Without Control, a strong Friend can drift toward rivalry with peers and splitting of resources. With Control, that same equal-energy is no longer allowed to run loose. The rival becomes a teammate under a hierarchy. The classical texts read this as rivalry placed under rules: the same peers become a team with a structure.
In behavior, this shape tends to act well when there is a clear authority, code, or process. A person with this shape can take a defined role inside a group and hold it steadily. The liability is that the underlying Friend does not disappear. When the rule system is absent or unclear, the person can hesitate, because the self-reliant part and the disciplined part are not the same thing.
The shape is configuration 3 when Control is present and strong enough to dominate the Friend, rather than merely touching it.
4. Friend heavy with heavy Resource and no outlet (印比两旺)
Friend becomes a storage tank when Resource feeds it and nothing lets the energy out.
The arrangement: Friend and Resource together dominate the chart, while Output and Wealth are thin. Resource feeds the Day Master; Friend adds more of the same element. Output would give the Day Master a way to spend energy by producing the next element. Wealth would give it a way to direct energy outward by controlling something. When both are thin, the energy has nowhere to go.
The mechanism is over-support with no release. Producing, controlling, and being controlled are the three ways a Day Master element spends itself. If those channels are weak, all the Resource-fed and Friend-doubled strength stays inside the chart. The person is not lacking ability. The ability is held rather than expressed.
This is the classical figure of the self-contained person: independent, stubborn, slow to convert ability into results. At work, this shape tends to do well in long, solitary, sustained effort where no one needs an immediate visible product. It struggles when the situation demands frequent output, public milestones, or quick circulation of ideas. The material is there; the outlet is thin.
The shape is configuration 4 when support is heavy, Wealth is thin, and Output is too weak to move the energy outward.
A chart with no Friend at all is none of these four configurations. The Friend theme is absent, and other ten gods carry the chart.

For your own chart, the check takes four steps, and the free calculator does the counting.
Friend is a mechanical label, not a mood or a guess. A stem either matches your Day Master in element and polarity or it does not. The only work you do is finding where that stem sits and what the neighboring stars are doing. The method is easier to compare with Direct Resource (正印) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
- Find your Day Master. The Day Master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar — the stem above the day branch. It is the reference point for every ten god in the chart, so it is not counted as one of them.
- Read off your Friend stem. Because Friend is the same element and the same polarity, the Friend stem is your own Day Master stem:
| Day Master | Friend stem |
|---|---|
| Jia 甲 | Jia 甲 |
| Yi 乙 | Yi 乙 |
| Bing 丙 | Bing 丙 |
| Ding 丁 | Ding 丁 |
| Wu 戊 | Wu 戊 |
| Ji 己 | Ji 己 |
| Geng 庚 | Geng 庚 |
| Xin 辛 | Xin 辛 |
| Ren 壬 | Ren 壬 |
| Gui 癸 | Gui 癸 |
If you see that stem in the year, month, or hour position, you are looking at a Friend. If you find it as a hidden stem inside a branch, you are looking at a support.
- Count its appearances. A Friend can sit in any of the three visible stems — year, month, hour — or hide inside one of the four earthly branches. The branch of the month carries the strongest seasonal energy in the chart, and each branch contains one to three hidden stems with these weights:
- Visible stem: 1.0
- Hidden main qi: 1.0
- Hidden middle qi: 0.5
- Hidden residual qi: 0.3
The calculator adds these for you. What you need from the result is one number: how much Friend you actually have, and whether that number is a main voice in the chart or a background one.
- Look at what stands beside the Friend. A Friend does not act alone. It becomes one of the four configurations depending on the stars around it:
- Friend supporting a weak Day Master (比肩帮身) — the Day Master has thin support, and the Friend adds the missing weight.
- Friend competing for Wealth on a strong Day Master (比肩争财) — the Day Master is already well supported, and the Friend reaches for the same Wealth that is in view.
- Friend controlled by Officer or Killings (官杀制比) — Control is strong enough to place the Friend under discipline.
- Friend heavy with heavy Resource and no outlet (印比两旺) — Resource and Friend dominate while Output and Wealth are thin, and the Day Master has nowhere to send its strength.
Use the calculator’s strength report for the Day Master. Do not decide the strength for yourself; read what the report shows, then match the shape.
If you find no Friend anywhere — not in the three visible stems, not in any hidden stem — then none of the four configurations applies. The theme is absent, and other gods carry the chart.
Chart A: one visible Friend in an over-supported chart
Chart A has a moderate Friend — a single Jia in the year stem — but the support around it is so thick that the chart takes the shape of configuration 4, Friend heavy with heavy Resource and no outlet, with a miniature of configuration 2 around the one Wealth.
The Day Master is Jia 甲, so the year stem Jia is the Friend: weight 1.0. That is the only Friend in the chart.
Now look at what stands behind it. The two Zi branches each hold Gui, Direct Resource, for 1.0 each. The Chou branch holds Gui as middle qi, for 0.5. Direct Resource comes to 2.5. The hour stem Yi and the hidden Yi in the Mao branch together make Rob Wealth 2.0. Add Friend 1.0, and support for the Day Master totals 5.5. On the other side stand one Direct Wealth in the Chou branch, 1.0, and one Direct Officer as the residual qi of Chou, 0.3. Output is a single Hurting Officer, the month stem Ding, at 1.0.
So the weighted picture is not subtle: support 5.5 against Wealth 1.0, Output 1.0, and Control 0.3. The Day Master is heavily supported and has almost nothing thin to move toward. That is the fourth configuration — support dominant, outlet thin. The classical reading of that shape is self-contained stubbornness, slowness to turn ability into results, a person who holds their ground because there is no open channel for the strength to leave through.
The miniature second configuration shows in one detail: the single Direct Wealth sits in the Chou branch, and Rob Wealth is right beside it. Rob Wealth is the same element as the Day Master but the opposite polarity — the sibling-rival version of you. Two of the same element reach for one Wealth, which is exactly the crowding that configuration 2 describes. In this chart it is not the main story, because the Real story is the overpowering support. But the competition for that lone Wealth is visible in miniature.
Chart B: no Friend at all
Chart B has no Friend anywhere except the Day Master itself, so no Friend configuration applies; the same-element theme is carried entirely by Rob Wealth facing Direct Wealth.
The Day Master is Jia 甲, and the only Jia in the chart is the day stem itself — the reference point, not a ten god. The year stem is Yi, Rob Wealth. The hour stem is also Yi, Rob Wealth. Hidden inside the Mao branch is another Yi, Rob Wealth. No Jia appears in any visible stem or inside any branch.
The absence of Friend changes what the same-element theme looks like. Rob Wealth totals 3.0 from the two Yi stems and the Mao branch. Direct Wealth totals 3.0 from the visible Ji stem and the main qi of both Chou branches. Direct Resource comes to 2.0 from the Gui in Zi and the Gui middle qi in the two Chou branches, and Direct Officer is 0.6 from the residual Xin in each Chou. But none of that is a Friend configuration.
The difference between Chart A and Chart B is the difference between a double and a rival. Chart A has the same stem as the Day Master, so the doubled self exists, and the configuration names apply. Chart B has no doubled self; the same-element energy is all opposite polarity. That is Rob Wealth — same element, different polarity — doing the work that Friend would otherwise do, and a chart with no Friend is not a Friend chart at all. Its shape belongs to the Rob Wealth article.
Those two charts are structural illustrations, not anyone's fate. Your own check, run through the free calculator, ends at which shape you can name — configuration one, two, three, four, or none — and not at a verdict.
四What to do once you know
The star does not change; what you put next to it does.
You cannot change which stems sit in your chart. What you can change is the conditions around them: the type of work you take, who shares it, which deadlines and rules you place around it. The four configurations are pure types; a real chart can show one main shape with a small trace of another, as Chart A does. Read the block that matches the one from the check above and apply that one. This point connects directly with Rob Wealth (劫财) in Bazi: what it is, the four kinds, and which one is in your chart.
Friend supporting a weak Day Master
The mechanism here is thin support around the Day Master, with the Friend adding weight. The work that fits the mechanism is long, concrete, and largely self-driven: a trade, a routine practice, a project that remains one body and that only you can carry. When the pressure builds, help from an equal is more useful than guidance from above — ask someone at your level to take a stage of the task, not a mentor to evaluate it. What this shape punishes is scattering. One project carried to its end is how the added weight does its job; three projects carried halfway turn that weight into exhaustion.
Friend competing for Wealth on a strong Day Master
The mechanism is two identical claimants and one resource. Whenever you work with a sibling, friend, or close colleague toward one pool of money, one position, or one partner, define ownership before the work begins: separate markets, separate clients, separate responsibilities. Do not rely on goodwill to split an undivided pot later, because the losses in this configuration tend to flow through the peers. In a contest for a single slot, the move is to write the judging criteria in advance. When the contested resource is a person, the same shape is handled by creating distance rather than escalating a contest; the aim is to stop being two identical claimants to one person.
Friend controlled by Officer or Killings
In this configuration, a Direct Officer or Seven Killings stands strong enough to discipline the Friend. A row of equals turns into a team under a legitimate authority. Choose workplaces where a manager has the final say, training where an examiner grades the result, writing where an editor decides what goes in. When you lead a group of equals, put a decision procedure in place. What it punishes is an unstructured group of equal rank where no one has power to settle a dispute; without that authority the rivalry remains unmanaged.
Friend heavy with heavy Resource and no outlet
Friend and Resource together fill the chart while Output and Wealth are thin. Put an external deadline on the work, and make a result visible to another person: exams, submissions, presentations on a repeating rhythm. What this shape punishes is adding another form of support when nothing finished has left the room. If you catch yourself starting another book, course, or certification while the last effort remains unfinished, this configuration tends to reward stopping the intake and building an outlet. When someone contradicts the plan, the shape tends to close ranks; pause between the objection and your answer.
Common misreadings
- “Friend in the chart means loyal friends and good luck with people.” Friend is the same element and the same polarity as your Day Master. It is you, doubled. It says nothing about how loyal or lucky the people around you are.
- “More Friends means more strength.” Friend adds weight. A weak Day Master is steadier with that weight, but an over-supported chart with no outlet has too much inside and nowhere to send it; the classical readings call that self-contained and slow, not strong.
- “No Friend means no peers and no support.” The Friend theme is absent, that is all. Same element with the opposite polarity, Rob Wealth, can still appear; Resource can still feed the Day Master; every remaining god carries weight.
Where this stops
One star is a relation between two stems; it does not stand alone in a complete chart. The condition of your Day Master comes from the whole set of supporting and draining forces in all four pillars, which is why the free calculator must count every visible and hidden stem before any statement about strength. A shape is not a promise; it is a tendency under pressure. When certain conditions appear, this tendency tends to follow. No prediction of illness, death, divorce, bankruptcy, or wealth is being made in this article. Tendency and mechanism are the limit of the reading. You do not choose your stems; you choose what you put next to them.
