Direct Resource vs Indirect Resource: Reading Support in a Bazi Chart

一 What is the difference?

What Direct Resource and Indirect Resource Mean

Direct Resource and Indirect Resource are the two Resource labels in a Bazi chart. Resource is the element that generates the Day Master. For Jia Yang Wood, Water generates Wood, so Gui Yin Water is Direct Resource and Ren Yang Water is Indirect Resource. The shared relationship is generation; the contrast is polarity: Gui has opposite polarity to Jia, Ren has the same polarity. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.

Think of a library. Direct Resource is a catalogued shelf with a librarian; Indirect Resource is a stack of unlabelled boxes you open yourself. Both hold useful material, but the route to it differs.

Traditionally, Direct Resource is associated with established instruction and organized support, while Indirect Resource is associated with exploratory or unconventional ways of absorbing ideas. These are interpretive associations, not fixed traits. Neither label is inherently better, and neither should be read as intelligence, credentials, or parenting quality.

  • Direct Resource: opposite polarity, structured transmission.
  • Indirect Resource: same polarity, self-directed inquiry.

Read the actual hidden stems before citing counts. See the Bazi Calculator for both labels.

二 Where to find each in your chart

Where to Read the Four Pillars and Hidden Stems

Open https://bazi-calculator.org/ and enter birth date, time, and place; if the hour is unknown, choose “I don’t know the hour.” Read the Day stem first: it is the Day Master, the reference point for every label. Then inspect the other three visible stems and the hidden stems inside each branch.

Each pillar has a top stem, a bottom branch, and hidden characters within that branch. The top stem is visible and weighs 1.0. The branch’s hidden stems are listed in order, weighted 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3 by position. For Jia Wood, a hidden Jia contributes Friend; the visible Day Master is not counted as Friend.

Labels depend on the Day Master, so the same other stem changes meaning. Gui Yin Water is Direct Resource for Jia; Ren Yang Water is Indirect Resource. For Yi Wood, Ren becomes Direct Resource and Gui Indirect Resource. Traditional associations describe established instruction versus exploratory learning, not ability or diagnosis.

Read components before citing numbers; quantities alone do not define strong or weak, and an absent label is not a personal deficit. Compare your chart here.

癸 → Direct Resource; 壬 → Indirect Resource. Exclude only the visible Day Master from the totals below.

三 How to read the pair

How to Compare Direct and Indirect Resource for Jia Wood

Begin with the element relationship, then apply polarity. For a Jia Wood Day Master, the Resource family is Water, because Water generates Wood. Next, compare polarity: Gui Yin Water is the opposite polarity to Jia Yang Wood, so it is Direct Resource; Ren Yang Water shares Jia's polarity, so it is Indirect Resource. The table below generalizes this pairing: for each Day Master, the first listed stem is Direct Resource and the second is Indirect Resource. Read the row for your Day Master before comparing any chart.

Then inspect where each stem sits. A visible stem in the Four Pillars counts at 1.0. A hidden stem counts by its position in the hidden list: 1.0 for the first, 0.5 for the second, 0.3 for the third. These weights are positional, not measures of inherent strength. The visible Day Master is excluded from Friend counting, but a hidden Jia still contributes Friend. Do not treat a hidden matching stem as the Day Master itself.

Two counting methods answer different questions. The visible count records only stems shown in the pillars; the weighted count adds hidden stems at their positional weights. In the first example, 癸亥 丙辰 甲子 乙亥, Direct Resource has one visible Gui and hidden Gui at month (0.3) and day (1.0), totaling 2.3; Indirect Resource has two hidden Ren at 1.0 each, totaling 2.0. In the second, 辛酉 壬辰 甲寅 乙丑, Indirect Resource is one visible Ren (1.0), while Direct Resource is hidden Gui at month (0.3) and hour (0.5), totaling 0.8.

Root visibility matters: a visible Resource stem is openly expressed, while hidden stems are latent. Neither count establishes strong or weak. Season is read from the month branch, not inferred from counts. Traditional associations describe Direct Resource as established instruction and organized support, and Indirect Resource as exploratory or unconventional learning; treat these as traditional labels, not personal deficits.

  • Step 1: confirm Water generates Jia Wood.
  • Step 2: assign Gui as Direct and Ren as Indirect by polarity.
  • Step 3: read the all-day-master table row.
  • Step 4: count visible and weighted components separately.
  • Step 5: check root visibility and month season.

四 When the comparison changes

Visible versus hidden

A visible stem appears in one of the four pillar positions; a hidden stem sits inside the branch beneath it. For Jia Yang Wood, Gui Yin Water is Direct Resource and Ren Yang Water is Indirect Resource. In 癸亥 丙辰 甲子 乙亥, the visible layer shows one Direct Resource at the year stem, while the hidden layer adds two Indirect Resource stems and two further Direct Resource components. Visible and hidden counts therefore tell different stories about where support is located. Read the hidden list before citing any number, because a label that never surfaces can still be present in the branches. A visible stem is easy to overvalue; a hidden stem is easy to miss. Neither layer cancels the other, and neither is a statement about the person. When the layers disagree, the disagreement is the useful information: surface presentation and underlying storage are not aligned, which is a structural observation rather than a judgment.

One versus both

Finding one Resource label is not the same as finding both. In 辛酉 壬辰 甲寅 乙丑, Indirect Resource appears once as a visible month stem, while Direct Resource appears only in hidden positions. The two are not interchangeable: traditional commentary associates Direct Resource with established instruction and organized support, and Indirect Resource with exploratory or unconventional ways of absorbing ideas. These are interpretive associations, not measures of intelligence, credentials, or mental health. When both labels are present, do not infer a formal chart structure from that fact alone; the labels describe which generating elements are recorded, not a verdict about the person. One label means one documented channel of support; both means two, and the relationship between them requires reading actual positions and layers rather than assuming a fixed pattern.

Numerical weighting versus actual strength

The weighted method assigns 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3 according to each hidden list position, while all other visible stems receive 1.0. These weights are counting conventions, not inherent strength. In the first chart, Direct Resource reaches 2.3 by weight and Indirect Resource 2.0; in the second, Indirect Resource is 1.0 and Direct Resource 0.8. A higher weighted total does not by itself mean the Day Master is strong, and a lower total does not mean it is weak. Check both the visible tally and the weighted tally, because they can diverge. The visible day stem is the Day Master and is never counted as Friend; a hidden Jia, by contrast, contributes Friend. Quantities describe recorded components, not vitality. A weight of 1.0 on a visible stem and 1.0 on a hidden stem are not structurally equivalent even though the number matches, because layer and position differ. The weighted total is bookkeeping that lets you compare charts on a consistent scale, not a measurement of support received in practice.

Positions and unknown hour

Position matters as much as presence. A Resource stem in the year or month slot sits in a different structural location from one in the hour slot, and the hidden components under each branch belong to that branch's own layer. When the hour is unknown, the hour pillar cannot be read, so any Resource component that would have appeared there is simply unavailable. Do not treat that absence as a personal deficit or as evidence of a missing quality. Note which positions remain readable and which are closed off, then compare visible and weighted counts only across the pillars you actually have. Read the hidden stems first, cite the numbers second, and keep traditional associations clearly labeled as traditional. An unknown hour narrows the readable field; it does not invalidate the pillars that remain, and it does not license filling the gap with assumptions.

五 Worked chart examples

These teaching charts were screened from the calendar engine. They do not describe clients or assert life events. Visible counts and hidden-stem weighted totals agree on the numerical emphasis in each example; neither is an overall strength verdict.

Position year month day hour
Stem 癸 丙 甲 乙
Branch 亥 辰 子 亥
Ten god Direct Resource Eating God Day Master Rob Wealth
Hidden stems 壬 Indirect Resource (1)
甲 Friend (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (1)
乙 Rob Wealth (0.5)
癸 Direct Resource (0.3)
癸 Direct Resource (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (1)
甲 Friend (0.5)

Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Friend 1.0; Rob Wealth 1.5; Eating God 1.0; Indirect Wealth 1.0; Indirect Resource 2.0; Direct Resource 2.3.

Visible non-day stems — Direct Resource: 1; Indirect Resource: 0.

Chart A: Direct Resource and Indirect Resource Compared

Chart A has the pillars 癸亥, 丙辰, 甲子, 乙亥. The Day Master is 甲 Jia Yang Wood, visible in the day stem. For Jia Wood, 癸 Gui Yin Water is Direct Resource and 壬 Ren Yang Water is Indirect Resource.

Reading the hidden stems, 癸 appears three times: visibly in the year stem at weight 1.0, hidden in the month branch at 0.3, and hidden in the day branch at 1.0. That gives one visible occurrence and a weighted total of 2.3. 壬 appears twice, both hidden in the year and hour branches at 1.0 each, giving no visible occurrence and a weighted total of 2.0.

The visible count favors Direct Resource by one stem, while the weighted count favors it by 0.3. This is a mild numerical emphasis within the Resource pair, not a statement about overall chart strength. The two hidden 壬 occurrences show that Indirect Resource is present in the branches even though it never surfaces in a visible stem.

Three exact relationships follow from these components. First, the visible 癸 in the year stem and the hidden 癸 in the day branch both sit at weight 1.0, so Direct Resource is represented in two different pillars. Second, the two hidden 壬 stems are split between the year and hour branches, placing Indirect Resource at opposite ends of the chart. Third, the month branch carries a hidden 癸 at 0.3, the smallest Resource weight here, while the month stem is 丙 Bing Yang Fire, an Eating God component at 1.0. Traditionally, Direct Resource is associated with established instruction and organized support, while Indirect Resource is associated with exploratory or unconventional absorption of ideas. These are interpretive associations, not measures of ability or character.

Chart B — 辛酉 / 壬辰 / 甲寅 / 乙丑
Position year month day hour
Stem 辛 壬 甲 乙
Branch 酉 辰 寅 丑
Ten god Direct Officer Indirect Resource Day Master Rob Wealth
Hidden stems 辛 Direct Officer (1) 戊 Indirect Wealth (1)
乙 Rob Wealth (0.5)
癸 Direct Resource (0.3)
甲 Friend (1)
丙 Eating God (0.5)
戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3)
己 Direct Wealth (1)
癸 Direct Resource (0.5)
辛 Direct Officer (0.3)

Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Friend 1.0; Rob Wealth 1.5; Eating God 0.5; Indirect Wealth 1.3; Direct Wealth 1.0; Direct Officer 2.3; Indirect Resource 1.0; Direct Resource 0.8.

Visible non-day stems — Direct Resource: 0; Indirect Resource: 1.

Chart B: 辛酉 · 壬辰 · 甲寅 · 乙丑

Chart B places Direct Officer 辛 in the year stem and year branch, with a further 辛 hidden in the hour branch. Its Indirect Resource 壬 sits visibly in the month, while Direct Resource 癸 appears only in hidden positions. The Day Master 甲 is not counted as a Friend; the hidden 甲 in the day branch contributes Friend at 1.0. Visible Rob Wealth 乙 in the hour weighs 1.0, with a hidden 乙 at 0.5 in the month. Eating God 丙 is hidden in the day branch at 0.5. Indirect Wealth 戊 is hidden twice, at 1.0 and 0.3; Direct Wealth 己 is hidden once at 1.0.

Contrast with Chart A

Chart A reverses the Resource emphasis: visible 癸 in the year gives Direct Resource 1.0, hidden 癸 in the month adds 0.3, and hidden 癸 in the day adds 1.0, totaling 2.3. Indirect Resource 壬 is hidden twice at 1.0 each, totaling 2.0. Chart B instead shows visible 壬 at 1.0 for Indirect Resource, while Direct Resource 癸 is hidden at 0.3 and 0.5, totaling 0.8.

The positional shift explains the reversal. In Chart A, Direct Resource occupies the visible year stem and a hidden day position; in Chart B, Indirect Resource takes the visible month stem, and Direct Resource retreats to hidden month and hour slots. Visible stems carry 1.0, while hidden list positions carry 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3 according to their order, so a visible placement changes the weighted total without implying inherent strength. Chart B also introduces visible Direct Officer 辛 at 1.0, hidden 辛 at 1.0, and hidden 辛 at 0.3, totaling 2.3, whereas Chart A has no Officer component. Friend, Rob Wealth, Eating God and Indirect Wealth remain present in both charts at differing weights; Direct Wealth appears only in Chart B. Traditional associations treat Direct Resource as organized support and Indirect Resource as exploratory absorption; these labels describe configuration, not personal capacity.

六 How often do the two labels coexist?

Within the 51,840 combinations whose Day Master is Jia 甲, presence means at least one matching visible non-day stem or hidden stem. This conditional subset contains 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 6 Jia day pillars × 12 hour slots, with valid derived stems. It is not the full 518,400-combination space for all Day Masters.

Configuration Combinations Proportion
Neither 2,826 5.4514%
Direct Resource only 17,674 34.0934%
Indirect Resource only 7,414 14.3017%
Both 23,926 46.1535%

These are equal-weight combination-space proportions, not percentages of people, income outcomes, personality types or birth-registry frequencies. A hidden occurrence counts as presence even when no matching stem is visible above the branches. Only the visible Day Master is excluded. Repeated occurrences do not increase the number of charts counted.

Calculate your chart, identify your Day Master, and compare the visible and hidden occurrences before interpreting either label.
