Earth Na Yin: Roadside, Walls, Roofs and the Six Earth Labels

一 What it is

Earth Na Yin names are six paired labels in the sixty-pillar cycle that use ground, wall, roof, station and sand imagery to distinguish one Earth pair from another. Think of a city map: a roadside strip, a fortress wall, a rooftop, an interior wall, a post-station and a sandbank are all Earth, yet each occupies a different place and suggests a different material situation. What makes this element's name group distinctive is that all six share the same element while their images move from open ground to built structure to loose material. Each name covers two adjacent stem–branch pairs, not a stem or a branch alone, so 庚午 and 辛未 both carry Roadside Earth 路旁土, while 戊申 and 己酉 both carry Great-Station Earth 大驿土. This article treats those names as place and material metaphors, not as forecasts about jobs, housing, wealth or protection. It also keeps the six rows separate: City-Wall Earth 城头土 is not Wall Earth 壁上土, and neither should be merged with Rooftop Earth 屋上土 or Sand Earth 沙中土. When you read what Na Yin labels, remember that the label belongs to the pair, while the visible and hidden stem elements remain separate bookkeeping.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Open the calculator and look at the Four Pillars grid. It shows Year, Month, Day and Hour columns. Each column has a top stem, a bottom branch and small hidden stem characters beneath the branch. The main interface has no dedicated Na Yin row and no growth phase row, and it does not print every hidden Ten God label. To check an Earth Na Yin name, copy a complete valid pair from the position you want: for example, copy the Month stem and Month branch together, or the Hour stem and Hour branch together. Then match that complete pair in this article's six-row lookup. If the pair is not in this Earth group, consult the complete thirty-name table instead of forcing a match. The Day Master is the Day stem alone, not the Day pillar's Na Yin. If the birth hour is unknown, the hour column is unconfirmed and should not be used as a settled pair. You can calculate your chart to see the stems, branches and hidden stems before comparing pairs.

Copy one complete pillar: Year / Month / Day / Hour → top stem + bottom branch → exact pair in the article lookup. The Day stem alone identifies the Day Master.

三 How to read the six names

The six Earth names are easiest to learn as a sequence of literal images. Roadside Earth 路旁土 is the strip beside a road: flat, exposed and part of everyday travel. City-Wall Earth 城头土 is the raised wall around a settlement, a built boundary rather than open ground. Rooftop Earth 屋上土 is the covering layer on a building, placed above the rooms rather than at ground level. Wall Earth 壁上土 is the wall surface itself, an interior or exterior partition. Great-Station Earth 大驿土 is the ground of a post-station or major route, a broad stopping place. Sand Earth 沙中土 is loose, granular earth that behaves differently from packed wall material. These are teaching metaphors. They do not mean one element needs another, and they do not predict personality.

Keep the canonical Chinese labels with the English glosses shown here. The translations are editorial, not universal standards. Roadside Earth 路旁土, City-Wall Earth 城头土, Rooftop Earth 屋上土, Wall Earth 壁上土, Great-Station Earth 大驿土 and Sand Earth 沙中土 each cover two complete pairs. The six-row table below gives two cycle indexes and two complete pairs per name. The cycle indexes identify pairs; they are not ranks or literal ages. Use the table as a lookup, not as a second list of definitions.

For practical lookup, first choose a position: Year, Month, Day or Hour. Copy the complete pair from that position. Then find the pair in the six-row table. If the pair is 戊申 or 己酉, the name is Great-Station Earth 大驿土. If the pair is 庚午 or 辛未, the name is Roadside Earth 路旁土. If the pair is 戊寅 or 己卯, the name is City-Wall Earth 城头土. If the pair is 丙戌 or 丁亥, the name is Rooftop Earth 屋上土. If the pair is 庚子 or 辛丑, the name is Wall Earth 壁上土. If the pair is 丙辰 or 丁巳, the name is Sand Earth 沙中土. For the wider set, use the complete thirty-name Na Yin table.

Do not let the Na Yin label replace the stem and branch reading. A visible Earth stem is still an Earth stem, and a hidden Earth stem is still a hidden Earth stem. The Na Yin name does not add hidden stems, change Ten Gods or add to weighted element totals. For Jia Yang Wood, Earth is the Wealth category: Wu is Indirect Wealth and Ji is Direct Wealth. Na Yin Earth itself is not a Wealth Ten God. The fixed 1, 0.5 and 0.3 weights are this calculator's bookkeeping, not seasonal strengths. Branch polarity does not overwrite hidden stem polarity.

四 When the reading changes

Same Na Yin element, different name

Two pillars can both carry an Earth Na Yin name and still belong to different rows. For example, a Month pillar of 戊申 is Great-Station Earth 大驿土, while an Hour pillar of 辛未 is Roadside Earth 路旁土. The shared element does not merge the names. Check the complete pair first, then read the row. This is also why City-Wall Earth 城头土 and Wall Earth 壁上土 should not be treated as one label: 戊寅 and 己卯 are City-Wall, while 庚子 and 辛丑 are Wall. The distinction is observable from the pair itself.

Visible Earth versus hidden Earth

Look at the target column's stem and hidden stems, not just the Na Yin name. In Chart A, the Month pillar 戊申 has a visible Wu Earth stem and a hidden Wu Earth at 0.3, so the target column contains literal Earth. In Chart B, the Hour pillar 辛未 has a visible Xin Metal stem and a hidden Ji Earth at 1, so the target column contains literal Earth through the hidden stem rather than the visible stem. This is a column-level check. It does not mean Earth is absent elsewhere in the chart.

Same Day Master, different labels

Both teaching charts use Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master, yet their target Earth Na Yin names differ. Chart A's target is Great-Station Earth 大驿土 at the Month. Chart B's target is Roadside Earth 路旁土 at the Hour. The Day Master is the same, but the labels are not. Use the exact-pair Na Yin lookup method to confirm each pair before comparing the names. The label follows the pair, not the Day Master.

Actual stem and hidden element totals versus labels

Chart A reports Earth 2.9, while Chart B reports Earth 2.8. Those totals come from the calculator's visible and hidden element bookkeeping, not from the Na Yin names. The Na Yin label does not add to either total. Also check which stems and hidden stems are actually present: a visible peer is not a hidden root, and Water is Resource for Jia, not a same-element Water root. Only hidden Jia is a same-stem root; hidden Jia or Yi gives same-element Wood root for Jia. These checks keep the label, the Ten Gods and the weighted totals in separate layers.

五 Worked chart examples

Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Jia Yang Wood Day Master. Each has exactly one Earth Na Yin label, at the position identified in the explanation; actual element stems are counted separately.

Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 1, Earth 2.9, Metal 2.5, Water 3.

Chart A uses Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master and has pillars 壬申, 戊申, 甲子 and 己巳. The target Earth Na Yin pillar is the Month pillar 戊申, which is Great-Station Earth 大驿土. Its visible stem is Wu Earth, which is Indirect Wealth for Jia. Its branch is Shen Metal. The hidden stems in Shen are Geng Seven Killings at 1, Ren Indirect Resource at 0.5 and Wu Indirect Wealth at 0.3. The target column therefore has a visible Earth stem and a hidden Earth stem, and the Na Yin name is Earth, but the Na Yin itself does not add a hidden stem or change any Ten God.

The actual Earth element total for Chart A is 2.9. That figure belongs to the calculator's weighted element bookkeeping and should not be changed because the Month Na Yin is Great-Station Earth. One decisive check is the Month pair: 戊申 is a complete valid pair, and it matches the Great-Station Earth row with indexes 45 and 46. Another decisive check is the target column's literal Earth: Wu appears visibly as the Month stem and again hidden in Shen at 0.3. The other pillars are not the target Earth Na Yin pillar, even if they contain Earth stems or hidden Earth. The Hour pillar 己巳 has a visible Ji Earth stem, but its Na Yin is Great Forest Wood, not an Earth name. The Year pillar 壬申 has hidden Wu Earth at 0.3, but its Na Yin is Sword-Edge Metal. The Day pillar 甲子 has no Earth stem or hidden Earth and its Na Yin is Sea Metal. These checks keep the target name at the Month and prevent the label from being spread across the chart.

Weighted element totals: Wood 2.8, Fire 2, Earth 2.8, Metal 1, Water 2.3.

Chart B uses Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master and has pillars 壬午, 壬寅, 甲辰 and 辛未. The target Earth Na Yin pillar is the Hour pillar 辛未, which is Roadside Earth 路旁土. Its visible stem is Xin Metal, which is Direct Officer for Jia. Its branch is Wei Earth. The hidden stems in Wei are Ji Direct Wealth at 1, Ding Hurting Officer at 0.5 and Yi Rob Wealth at 0.3. The target column therefore has no visible Earth stem, but it does have hidden Ji Earth at 1. The Na Yin name is Earth, yet the Na Yin itself does not add a hidden stem, change a Ten God or add to the weighted total.

Compared with Chart A, all four complete pillars differ: 壬申 / 戊申 / 甲子 / 己巳 in A versus 壬午 / 壬寅 / 甲辰 / 辛未 in B. The Day stem remains 甲, but the Day branches are 子 and 辰. This is a comparison of teaching charts, not a controlled experiment or a chronological life story. The target Earth Na Yin also stays at its actual position: Great-Station Earth 大驿土 at the Month in Chart A, and Roadside Earth 路旁土 at the Hour in Chart B. Chart B's actual Earth element total is 2.8, slightly below Chart A's 2.9. One practical reader check is to copy the Hour pair 辛未, confirm it in the Roadside Earth row, and then read the hidden Ji Earth separately from the visible Xin Metal. For the Ten God names used here, see the Ten Gods reference.

六 What the counts mean

This Earth group contains six Na Yin names covering twelve of the sixty sexagenary-cycle entries. Each name belongs to two adjacent cycle entries. These are lookup-table counts, not a population distribution or a probability of any life outcome. They do not describe how much Earth is present in a chart’s weighted element totals.

Calculation reference: the calendar library’s Na Yin mapping. Chinese labels follow the verified table; English names are editorial glosses. No Na Yin element is added to the calculator’s stem-based totals.
