一 What it is
Na Yin is a sixty-entry lookup table that assigns one fixed name to each complete stem-branch pair in the 60 Jia Zi cycle. Think of a library shelf label: the book’s contents stay whatever they are, while the label simply tells you which pair sits together. Its distinctive scope is whole-pair naming: each of the thirty names covers two consecutive cycle positions, so 甲子 and 乙丑 share 海中金, while 甲申 and 乙酉 share 泉中水. The cycle index is position, not rank.
Na Yin element is a whole-pair label, not a hidden stem, Ten God, growth phase, or Day Master element. For a 甲 Yang Wood Day Master, 甲申 (Spring Water) and 甲午 (Sand Metal) are both still Jia Wood Day Masters. Na Yin Wood or Water does not create hidden Wood or Water stems, and it is not added to the calculator’s fixed 1/.5/.3 hidden-stem weights, which are bookkeeping rather than seasonal strength.
All sixty entries can appear across the cycle, but one chart holds only four pairs. A chart may repeat a Na Yin name or omit most others. Growth phases also depend on the reference stem and chosen branch: Yang forward, Yin reverse, Earth following Fire. At the day position, the Day Master phase and own-stem phase agree because the reference stem is identical.
二 Where to find it in your chart
In the main calculator, the Four Pillars grid shows Year, Month, Day, and Hour, each with a top stem and bottom branch; small hidden stem characters sit beneath. Copy the complete pair in the chosen column, such as 甲申 or 甲午, then look it up here. The Day Master is the day stem only. There is no dedicated Na Yin or growth-phase row in the grid, so this article supplies the Na Yin lookup separately. To calculate your chart and read the pairs directly, keep the grid open beside this table.
Each of the 30 Na Yin labels covers two consecutive pairs in the 60 Jia Zi cycle. For example, group 11 is 泉中水, Spring Water, covering 甲申 and 乙酉. Group 16 is 沙中金, Sand Metal, covering 甲午 and 乙未. Both 甲申 and 甲午 are Jia Wood Day Masters, yet their Na Yin elements differ. The Chinese label is the key; English glosses are editorial. Six labels and twelve entries belong to each element. These are lookup counts, not people or probabilities.
三 How to read it
Na Yin is a whole-pair lookup label. Each row of the table below gives a group number, two cycle index positions, the two complete stem-branch pairs that share the name, the canonical Chinese label, an editorial English gloss, and one element. The Chinese characters are the key; the English wording is only a translation aid, so a different rendering of 泉中水 does not move 甲申 or 乙酉 to another row. To use the table, first identify a complete pillar pair, then find it among the sixty entries. For example, 甲申 and 乙酉 both sit at group 11, indexes 21 and 22, under 泉中水, Spring Water. That label is assigned to the pair as a unit. It is not a hidden stem, not a Ten God, not a growth phase, and not the Day Master element.
Keep Na Yin separate from the layers that already have their own rules. In a Jia Yang Wood chart, hidden stems retain their own element and polarity: hidden 甲 or 乙 supplies a Wood root, only 甲 is the same-stem root, and hidden 壬 or 癸 supplies Water Resource. A visible peer is not itself a hidden root. Na Yin Wood or Water does not create hidden Wood or Water stems, and it is not added to the fixed 1, .5, and .3 weights, which are calculator bookkeeping rather than seasonal strength. Growth phases depend on the reference stem and the chosen branch, with Yang forward, Yin reverse, and Earth following Fire. At the day position, the Day Master phase and the own-stem phase agree because the reference stem is identical. Cycle index is position, not ranking.
Compare 甲申 and 甲午. Both have Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master, yet 甲申 belongs to 泉中水, Spring Water, while 甲午 belongs to 沙中金, Sand Metal. The Day Master element has not changed; only the complete pair has changed, so the lookup label changes with it. This is why a Na Yin name should not be read as the chart's Wood root or as a statement about the person. The same distinction applies across the the sixty Jia Zi cycle: each pair is a fixed coordinate, and its Na Yin label travels with that coordinate. A complete table of thirty names does not mean all thirty occur in one chart; most charts show only a few of these pairs.
Use this sequence: list each complete pillar pair, locate its row, record the Chinese name and element, then return to the ordinary chart layers for hidden stems, Ten Gods, phases, and weighted totals. Do not rewrite those totals because a Na Yin element appears. If another calculator seems to disagree, compare the complete pairs and the time conventions first, because a different hour or day boundary can change which pair is being looked up. After the pairs match, compare the Chinese labels before interpreting anything. The table is static and scrollable on mobile, and the main calculator has no dedicated Na Yin panel, so this page is a reference for the lookup step only.
Use the separate five-element counting guide when interpreting weighted totals; this table does not replace that calculation.

四 When the reading changes
Same Jia Stem, Different Pair, Different Na Yin Label
Start with the day pillar alone. In the first teaching chart the day pillar is 甲申, and in the second it is 甲午. Both have the same visible day stem, Jia Yang Wood, so both are Jia Day Masters. Yet the Na Yin lookup uses the complete pair, not the stem alone: 甲申 belongs to group 11, 泉中水, Spring Water, while 甲午 belongs to group 16, 沙中金, Sand Metal. A practical check is to open the table, find each pair in the pillars column, and read across to its group number, Chinese label, English gloss, and element. The result is narrow: identical day stems can carry different Na Yin labels because the branch changes the lookup key. This does not mean one chart is stronger, luckier, or more compatible; it only confirms that the label is assigned to the whole pair.
Same Na Yin Element, Different Label
Now compare labels that share an element but not a name. 甲申 is 泉中水, Spring Water, and 壬戌 is 大海水, Great Sea Water. Both rows show element Water, but they are separate groups with separate Chinese names and separate index ranges. A practical check is to scan the element column for Water, count six labels, then verify that 甲申 and 壬戌 sit in different groups. This shows that Na Yin element and Na Yin label are not interchangeable. Two charts can both show a Water Na Yin while using different Chinese keys. This matters when comparing output from another calculator: compare the complete pair and the calendar convention first, because an apparent disagreement may come from a different time standard or day boundary, not from the Na Yin table itself.
Choose the Correct Pillar Before Reading a Label
Na Yin is attached to each pillar, so position matters. In the first chart, the year pillar 辛未 is 路旁土, Roadside Earth; the month pillar 辛丑 is 壁上土, Wall Earth; the day pillar 甲申 is 泉中水, Spring Water; and the hour pillar 己巳 is 大林木, Great Forest Wood. A practical check is to read the four pillars in order and match each complete pair to its own row, rather than applying the day pillar's label to the whole chart. This shows that a Na Yin name describes one pillar's pair. It is not a chart-wide element, not a hidden stem, and not a Ten God. If you also inspect hidden stems and their weights stems, keep those hidden stems separate from the Na Yin lookup.
Labels Versus Hidden Stems and Element Totals
The final check separates labels from roots. In the first chart, the day branch 申 hides 庚 Seven Killings, 壬 Indirect Resource, and 戊 Indirect Wealth. For Jia Wood, hidden Jia or Yi supplies a Wood root, and only Jia is the same-stem root; hidden Ren or Gui supplies Water Resource, not a same-element root for Jia. The Na Yin label 泉中水 does not add a hidden Water stem, and 大林木 does not add a hidden Wood stem. The supplied element totals, such as Wood 1.3 and Water 1, remain unchanged; the fixed 1, 0.5, and 0.3 weights are calculator bookkeeping, not seasonal strength. A practical check is to compare the hidden-stem list with the Na Yin row and confirm they are different layers. This shows that a complete 30-name table is a reference for pair labels, not proof that every name appears in one chart.
五 Worked chart examples
Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Jia Yang Wood Day Master; other placements differ.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 辛 | 辛 | 甲 | 己 |
| Branch | 未 | 丑 | 申 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Direct Officer | Direct Officer | Day Master | Direct Wealth |
| Na Yin (whole pair) | 路旁土 — Roadside Earth | 壁上土 — Wall Earth | 泉中水 — Spring Water | 大林木 — Great Forest Wood |
| Hidden stems | 己 Direct Wealth (1) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.5) 乙 Rob Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
庚 Seven Killings (1) 壬 Indirect Resource (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
丙 Eating God (1) 庚 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 墓 Grave | 冠带 Youth | 绝 Extinction | 病 Sickness |
| Own pillar stem phase | 衰 Decline | 养 Gestation | 绝 Extinction | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1.3, Fire 1.5, Earth 3.6, Metal 3.8, Water 1.
In Chart A the day pillar is 甲申. The visible stem 甲 is Jia Yang Wood, so the Day Master is Wood. The branch 申 hides 庚 Seven Killings, 壬 Indirect Resource and 戊 Indirect Wealth; those hidden stems keep their own elements and polarities. The Na Yin label for the whole pair 甲申 is 泉中水, Spring Water. That label is a lookup name for the complete pair, not a hidden stem, not a Ten God, and not the Day Master element. The day stem phase and own-stem phase agree at 绝 because the reference stem is identical.
Chart B has day pillar 甲午. The stem is again Jia Wood, but the branch 午 hides 丁 Hurting Officer and 己 Direct Wealth. Its Na Yin pair 甲午 carries 沙中金, Sand Metal. So 甲申 and 甲午 share a Day Master element while their branch contents and Na Yin labels differ. Na Yin Wood or Water never creates hidden Wood or Water stems, and the fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are calculator bookkeeping, not seasonal strength.
Year 辛未 gives 路旁土, Roadside Earth; month 辛丑 gives 壁上土, Wall Earth; hour 己巳 gives 大林木, Great Forest Wood. Read each as one complete pair. A visible peer is not itself a hidden root, and a Na Yin element is not added to the supplied element totals.
If a result disagrees, compare the complete pairs and the time conventions used before interpreting anything; do not assume all systems are identical. A complete table of thirty names does not mean every name appears in one chart.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 辛 | 辛 | 甲 | 己 |
| Branch | 巳 | 丑 | 午 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Direct Officer | Direct Officer | Day Master | Direct Wealth |
| Na Yin (whole pair) | 白蜡金 — White-Wax Metal | 壁上土 — Wall Earth | 沙中金 — Sand Metal | 大林木 — Great Forest Wood |
| Hidden stems | 丙 Eating God (1) 庚 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
己 Direct Wealth (1) 癸 Direct Resource (0.5) 辛 Direct Officer (0.3) |
丁 Hurting Officer (1) 己 Direct Wealth (0.5) |
丙 Eating God (1) 庚 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
| Jia Day Master phase | 病 Sickness | 冠带 Youth | 死 Death | 病 Sickness |
| Own pillar stem phase | 死 Death | 养 Gestation | 死 Death | 帝旺 Emperor |
Weighted element totals: Wood 1, Fire 3, Earth 3.1, Metal 3.3, Water 0.5.
Chart B keeps the same 甲 Day Master as Chart A, but only two pillars change: the year pillar moves from 辛未 to 辛巳, and the day pillar from 甲申 to 甲午. The month 辛丑 and hour 己巳 stay identical. This is a side-by-side teaching comparison, not a controlled experiment or fate story. Because the day pillar changes, its Na Yin label changes too: 甲申 carries 泉中水 (Spring Water), while 甲午 carries 沙中金 (Sand Metal). Both are still 甲 Wood Day Masters, so the same Day Master does not imply the same Na Yin label.
Na Yin is an independently assigned whole-pair label. 甲申 and 乙酉 share 泉中水; 甲午 and 乙未 share 沙中金. The Chinese pair is the key, and alternate English glosses do not change that assignment. Na Yin Wood or Water does not create hidden Wood or Water stems. In Chart B, the day branch 午 hides 丁 and 己 only, so the Sand Metal label adds no hidden stem, Ten God, or growth phase. For a fuller walkthrough of the 甲申 case, see this Jia Shen day pillar explanation.
Growth phases depend on the reference stem and chosen branch: Yang forward, Yin reverse, Earth follows Fire. At the day position, the Day Master phase and own-stem phase agree because the reference stem is identical. In Chart B, 甲 at 午 is 死 (Death), while 甲 at 申 is 绝 (Extinction). These are phase names, not predictions of age, health, or events. Hidden stems also keep their own element and polarity: 午 hides 丁 Fire and 己 Earth, not Wood. The fixed 1/.5/.3 weights are calculator bookkeeping, not seasonal strength, and Na Yin elements are not added to them.
When comparing two charts, first list which pillars actually changed. Then compare complete Na Yin pairs, not just the element word. If another calculator seems to disagree, check its time conventions and pair boundaries before assuming the systems match. Finally, keep the annual-pillar label separate from the day-pillar label. A complete 30-name table does not mean all names appear in one chart.
六 What the counts mean
The lookup contains 60 stem–branch entries grouped into 30 named pairs. Each Na Yin name covers two adjacent cycle entries. Each of the five elements has six names and twelve entries. These counts describe the lookup table, not the proportion of people or a probability of any life outcome.
