一 What is the difference?
What Eating God and Hurting Officer Mean
Both are Output: the element the Day Master generates. For Jia Yang Wood, Bing Yang Fire is Eating God; Ding Yin Fire is Hurting Officer. Same element, opposite polarity. Read the actual hidden stems before citing numbers: a hidden Jia contributes Friend, while the visible day stem is the Day Master, not a Friend. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.
Think of one workshop: Eating God is steady craft, finishing what it starts; Hurting Officer is the redesign that questions the brief. Traditional interpretation reads Eating God as sustained making and expression, Hurting Officer as pointed expression that challenges convention. These are symbolic modes, not personality diagnoses, talent scores, or guarantees.
Weights (1.0, 0.5, 0.3) are per hidden list position; other visible stems are 1.0. They are not inherent strength, and quantity alone does not decide strong or weak. Absence is not a deficit.
- Eating God: same polarity, smooth output.
- Hurting Officer: opposite polarity, edge and critique.
二 Where to find each in your chart
Reading Output Labels in the Four Pillars
Open https://bazi-calculator.org/, enter birth date, time and place; if the hour is unknown, choose “I don’t know the hour.” Read the Day stem first: it is the Day Master, the reference point for every label. Then read the labels shown for the other visible stems and for the hidden stems inside each branch.
Each pillar has a top stem, a bottom branch, and hidden characters within that branch. The top stem is the visible, surface layer; the branch is the seasonal ground; hidden stems are the branch’s internal components. For Jia Wood, visible Bing is Eating God and visible Ding is Hurting Officer. A hidden Jia contributes Friend; the Day Master itself is not counted as Friend.
Labels depend on the Day Master, not on the other stem alone. The same Bing is Eating God under Jia but Indirect Wealth under Ren. Traditional associations: Eating God suggests sustained making and expression; Hurting Officer suggests questioning conventions and pointed expression. These are symbolic modes, not diagnoses.

三 How to read the pair
How to Compare Eating God and Hurting Officer
Begin with the element relationship, then apply polarity. For Jia Yang Wood, the Output family is Fire, because Wood generates Fire. The table below gives the ordered pair for each Day Master: Jia pairs with Bing first and Ding second; Yi reverses to Ding then Bing; Bing pairs with Wu then Ji; Ding with Ji then Wu; Wu with Geng then Xin; Ji with Xin then Geng; Geng with Ren then Gui; Xin with Gui then Ren; Ren with Jia then Yi; Gui with Yi then Jia. The first stem is Eating God, the second is Hurting Officer.
Polarity decides the label. Same polarity as the Day Master yields Eating God; opposite polarity yields Hurting Officer. Jia is yang, so Bing Yang Fire is Eating God and Ding Yin Fire is Hurting Officer. Traditional associations describe Eating God as sustained making and expression, and Hurting Officer as questioning conventions and pointed expression; treat these as symbolic modes, not diagnoses.
Next, read the actual hidden-stem components before citing any number. In the first example, Jia sits in the day pillar with pillars Geng-Shen, Bing-Xu, Jia-Zi, Xin-Wei. Eating God appears once, visible Bing in the month, weight 1.0. Hurting Officer appears twice, both hidden Ding: month weight 0.3 and hour weight 0.5. The visible Day Master Jia is excluded from Friend, while hidden Jia would contribute Friend; here Friend is 0 and Rob Wealth is 0.3 from hidden Yi in the hour.
In the second example, pillars Wu-Yin, Ding-Si, Jia-Xu, Jia-Xu, Eating God is hidden Bing at year 0.5 and month 1.0; Hurting Officer is visible Ding at month 1.0 plus hidden Ding at day 0.3 and hour 0.3. Friend is 2 because hidden Jia at year and visible Jia at hour count, while the visible day-stem Jia is excluded.
Distinguish root visibility from counting. A visible stem is seen directly; a hidden stem sits inside a branch and may root a visible stem of the same element. Two ways of counting exist: visible-only tallies, and weighted tallies that include hidden stems at 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3 by list position. These weights are per hidden list position, not inherent strength. Counts are not strength, and season is not inferred from counts. Compare the pair by element relationship, polarity, root visibility, and both counting methods. See Eating God and Hurting Officer.

四 When the comparison changes
Visible versus hidden: what the Four Pillars actually show
A Bazi Calculator reading begins with what is plainly on the chart: the eight visible characters of the Four Pillars. For a Jia Wood Day Master, a visible Bing Fire is Eating God and a visible Ding Fire is Hurting Officer. Hidden stems sit inside the branches and are read separately, so a hidden Jia contributes a Friend component even though no other Jia appears among the non-day visible stems. The Day Master itself is never counted as a Friend. Before citing any number, read the actual hidden-stem components rather than assuming a label implies a quantity. In the first example chart, Eating God appears once as a visible Bing, while Hurting Officer appears only as hidden Ding in the month and hour branches. A visible-versus-hidden check therefore shows one Output mode on the surface and the other beneath it. Traditional interpretation treats visible stems as the more openly expressed mode and hidden stems as a quieter or less displayed one, but this is an interpretive association, not a rule about character.
One versus both: when only one Output mode is present
Some charts show only Eating God or only Hurting Officer; others show both. Finding both labels does not by itself establish a formal chart structure, and finding one does not mean the other is absent from the person's life. The second example chart contains visible Ding as Hurting Officer plus hidden Bing as Eating God, so both modes are present at different layers. A bounded traditional reading might note that the two Output forms are both available as symbolic modes, without ranking them or predicting behaviour. Because the visible day stem is the Day Master and is not counted as a Friend, the Output count comes only from the Fire stems and hidden components. Checking one-versus-both is a completeness check: it tells you which labels the chart actually carries before any interpretation is attempted.
Numerical weighting versus actual strength
Weighted totals use 1.0 for each visible stem and 1.0, 0.5 or 0.3 for hidden stems according to their position in the hidden list. These weights are per hidden list position, not inherent strength, and they do not decide strong or weak. In the first chart, Eating God weighs 1.0 from the visible Bing, while Hurting Officer weighs 0.8 from two hidden Ding components. In the second chart, Eating God weighs 1.5 and Hurting Officer 1.6, so the weighted totals are close even though the visible picture differs. Counts may differ across visible and weighted methods, which is why both should be checked. A higher weighted number is not a stronger personality trait, and a lower one is not a deficit; the numbers describe where components sit, not how a person functions.
Positions and the unknown hour
Position matters because the year, month, day and hour pillars carry different traditional associations, and hidden stems are read within their own branch. In the first chart, Eating God sits in the month while Hurting Officer is hidden in the month and hour; in the second, Hurting Officer is visible in the month and hidden in the day and hour. If the hour is unknown, the hour pillar and its hidden stems cannot be read, so any Output component located there is simply unavailable. This is a limitation of the input, not evidence about the person. A careful comparison states which positions were checked and which could not be, then limits interpretation to the pillars that are actually present.
五 Worked chart examples
These teaching charts were screened from the calendar engine. They do not describe clients or assert life events. Visible counts and hidden-stem weighted totals agree on the numerical emphasis in each example; neither is an overall strength verdict.

Reading the Output Pair in Chart A
Chart A uses Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master, so its Output family is Fire: Bing Yang Fire is Eating God, while Ding Yin Fire is Hurting Officer. The supplied Four Pillars are 庚申, 丙戌, 甲子, 辛未. Reading only visible stems and hidden stems, the Eating God appears once: the visible 丙 in the month stem, weight 1.0. The Hurting Officer appears twice, both hidden: 丁 in the month branch 戌 at weight 0.3, and 丁 in the hour branch 未 at weight 0.5. No other Bing or Ding occurs anywhere in the chart, so these three entries are the complete Output pair.
Visible count therefore favors Eating God 1 to 0, while the weighted count also favors Eating God, 1.0 to Hurting Officer’s 0.8. That is a mild numerical emphasis toward Eating God, not a statement that the chart is strong, weak, balanced, or dominated by Output. The weights are positional contributions from the hidden-stem lists, not measures of elemental strength, and the absence of a visible Ding does not mean the Hurting Officer is missing.
Three exact relationships follow from these components. First, the visible 丙 month stem is generated by the Jia Day Master and stands as the sole visible Output expression. Second, the hidden 丁 in 戌 and the hidden 丁 in 未 give Hurting Officer two separate positions, one at 0.3 and one at 0.5. Third, the visible 辛 hour stem is Direct Officer, while the hidden 辛 in 戌 is also Direct Officer; this places Officer material alongside the Output pair without implying that Hurting Officer attacks it or causes misconduct. Traditionally, Eating God is associated with sustained making and expression, and Hurting Officer with questioning conventions and pointed expression. Those are symbolic modes, not personality diagnoses, talent scores, or guarantees.
| Position | year | month | day | hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 戊 | 丁 | 甲 | 甲 |
| Branch | 寅 | 巳 | 戌 | 戌 |
| Ten god | Indirect Wealth | Hurting Officer | Day Master | Friend |
| Hidden stems | 甲 Friend (1) 丙 Eating God (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
丙 Eating God (1) 庚 Seven Killings (0.5) 戊 Indirect Wealth (0.3) |
戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 辛 Direct Officer (0.5) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.3) |
戊 Indirect Wealth (1) 辛 Direct Officer (0.5) 丁 Hurting Officer (0.3) |
Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Friend 2.0; Eating God 1.5; Hurting Officer 1.6; Indirect Wealth 3.6; Seven Killings 0.5; Direct Officer 1.0.
Visible non-day stems — Eating God: 0; Hurting Officer: 1.
Chart B (戊寅 丁巳 甲戌 甲戌) places Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master. Its Output family is led by Hurting Officer: visible Ding Yin Fire in the month stem, plus hidden Ding in the day and hour branches, giving 1.6 by the stated weights. Eating God appears only as hidden Bing Yang Fire in the year and month branches, totaling 1.5. The visible layer therefore shows one Hurting Officer and no Eating God, while the weighted layer keeps the two close, with Hurting Officer slightly ahead. Friend also registers 2.0: hidden Jia in the year branch and visible Jia in the hour stem. The day stem itself is the Day Master, not counted as Friend.
Contrast with Chart A
Chart A (庚申 丙戌 甲子 辛未) reverses both layers. Its visible Output is one Eating God: Bing on the month stem. Hurting Officer is entirely hidden, Ding in the month and hour branches, totaling 0.8. Weighted Eating God is 1.0, so visible and weighted emphasis agree on Eating God.
The positional change explains the reversal. In A, Bing occupies the exposed month stem, while Ding stays buried. In B, Ding occupies the exposed month stem, while Bing is buried in the year and month branches. Because visible stems carry 1.0 and hidden stems carry 1.0, 0.5 or 0.3 by list position, exposure shifts the visible count, and the hidden totals decide whether the weighted count follows. In B, hidden Bing (0.5 + 1.0) nearly matches visible Ding plus its hidden companions (1.0 + 0.3 + 0.3), so the weighted lead is narrow rather than decisive. In A, hidden Ding cannot overtake the exposed Bing.
Traditional associations treat Eating God as sustained making and expression, and Hurting Officer as questioning conventions and pointed expression. These are symbolic modes, not scores or diagnoses.
六 How often do the two labels coexist?
Within the 51,840 combinations whose Day Master is Jia 甲, presence means at least one matching visible non-day stem or hidden stem. This conditional subset contains 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 6 Jia day pillars × 12 hour slots, with valid derived stems. It is not the full 518,400-combination space for all Day Masters.
| Configuration | Combinations | Proportion |
|---|---|---|
| Neither | 2,754 | 5.3125% |
| Eating God only | 7,326 | 14.1319% |
| Hurting Officer only | 17,496 | 33.7500% |
| Both | 24,264 | 46.8056% |
These are equal-weight combination-space proportions, not percentages of people, income outcomes, personality types or birth-registry frequencies. A hidden occurrence counts as presence even when no matching stem is visible above the branches. Only the visible Day Master is excluded. Repeated occurrences do not increase the number of charts counted.
