Fire Na Yin: Furnace, Lamp, Lightning and the Other Fire Names

一 What it is

Na Yin is a sixty-entry reference system that assigns a three-character name to each complete stem-branch pair in the sexagenary cycle. Think of it like a library call number: the book's contents do not change, but the label helps you find and group it. The Fire group is distinctive because its six names all use Fire imagery, yet each name describes a different scene: Furnace Fire (炉中火), Mountain-Top Fire (山头火), Thunderbolt Fire (霹雳火), Mountain-Foot Fire (山下火), Lamp Fire (覆灯火), and Heavenly Fire (天上火). These are naming images, not instructions about temperament, danger, or career. The label belongs to the pair, not to either character alone. This matters because a pillar can carry a Fire Na Yin while its visible stem and hidden stems contain no Fire at all. Understanding what Na Yin labels means treating the name as a lookup result attached to a complete pair, separate from the element counting used elsewhere in the chart.

The label attaches to the whole pair, so Jia Chen and Jia Xu can both read Fire while their stems stay Wood.

二 Where to find it in your chart

Open the calculator and locate the Four Pillars grid. It displays four columns labeled Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each column shows a top stem, a bottom branch, and small hidden stem characters beneath the branch. There is no dedicated Na Yin row and no growth phase row in the main interface, and the grid does not print every hidden Ten God label. To find a Fire Na Yin, copy one complete valid pair exactly as shown, such as 甲辰 or 甲戌, then match it against the six-row lookup in this article. If the pair does not appear in that list, it belongs to a different element group; consult the complete table instead of forcing a match. The Day Master is the Day stem alone, not the Day pillar as a whole. If the birth hour is unknown, the Hour column is unconfirmed and should not be used for matching. Once you have a confirmed pair, calculate your chart and compare the result directly.

Copy one complete pillar: Year / Month / Day / Hour → top stem + bottom branch → exact pair in the article lookup. The Day stem alone identifies the Day Master.

三 How to read the six names

The six Fire names divide into three loose image families. Furnace Fire and Lamp Fire are contained fires: one burns inside a stove or kiln, the other inside a lamp housing. Mountain-Top Fire and Mountain-Foot Fire are landscape fires: one sits at a summit, the other at the base of a slope. Thunderbolt Fire and Heavenly Fire are sky fires: one arrives as a sudden strike, the other as the sun or a celestial body. These contrasts are teaching metaphors for distinguishing the names, not rules that one element requires another or that a person will behave in a particular way.

Each name covers exactly two consecutive pairs in the sexagenary cycle. Furnace Fire covers 丙寅 and 丁卯. Mountain-Top Fire covers 甲戌 and 乙亥. Thunderbolt Fire covers 戊子 and 己丑. Mountain-Foot Fire covers 丙申 and 丁酉. Lamp Fire covers 甲辰 and 乙巳. Heavenly Fire covers 戊午 and 己未. The two cycle indexes shown for each name identify its position in the sixty-pair sequence; they are not ranks, ages, or quality scores.

To look up a pillar, copy the complete pair from the grid, including both the stem and the branch. Match that exact pair against the six rows here. A match confirms the Na Yin name and element. A non-match means the pair belongs elsewhere in the cycle. Do not split the pair, and do not substitute the branch alone or the stem alone. The label is assigned to the pair as a unit.

Keep the Na Yin result separate from element counting. A Fire Na Yin does not convert its stem into Fire, does not add hidden stems, and does not change any Ten God assignment. The six-row table below lists each name with its two cycle indexes and two complete pairs. For pairs outside this group, use the complete thirty-name Na Yin table.

Check the actual placement before comparing names: read the pillar position, the visible stem, and each hidden stem, then confirm the pair against the six rows. Furnace Fire sits on Bing Yin and Ding Mao, Lamp Fire on Jia Chen and Yi Si, Mountain-Top Fire on Jia Xu and Yi Hai, Mountain-Foot Fire on Bing Shen and Ding You, Thunderbolt Fire on Wu Zi and Ji Chou, and Heavenly Fire on Wu Wu and Ji Wei. A Fire Na Yin never adds an element or alters a Ten God, so the same pair keeps its label wherever it appears, whether month or hour.

四 When the reading changes

Same Fire Element, Different Name

Two pillars can both carry a Fire Na Yin while naming different scenes. Chart A's month pillar 甲辰 is Lamp Fire; Chart B's hour pillar 甲戌 is Mountain-Top Fire. Both labels sit in the Fire group, but the names differ because the pairs differ. The element group is shared; the specific name is not interchangeable. When comparing charts, note both the group and the exact name before drawing any conclusion about similarity.

Target Column With and Without Literal Element Stems

A Fire Na Yin column does not need a Fire stem. In Chart A, the month pillar 甲辰 has Jia Wood as its visible stem and Chen Earth as its branch, with hidden Wu Earth, Yi Wood, and Gui Water. No Fire appears in the stem or hidden stems. In Chart B, the hour pillar 甲戌 has Jia Wood as its visible stem and Xu Earth as its branch, with hidden Wu Earth, Xin Metal, and Ding Fire. Here Ding Fire genuinely appears among the hidden stems. The Na Yin label is the same element group in both cases, but the literal stem and hidden contents differ. Use the exact-pair Na Yin lookup method to confirm each pair before comparing columns.

Same Day Master, Different Labels

Both teaching charts use Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master, yet their Fire Na Yin pillars carry different names at different positions. Chart A places Lamp Fire at the month; Chart B places Mountain-Top Fire at the hour. The Day Master is identical, so Ten God relationships for hidden stems follow the same Jia reference in both charts. What changes is the pair, its position, and therefore its Na Yin name. A shared Day Master does not unify Na Yin labels across charts. Position selects the pillar to inspect; the complete pair, not the Day Master, determines its label.

Actual Element Totals Versus Labels

Chart A reports a Fire total of 1.5; Chart B reports 1.3. These totals come from the calculator's fixed weighting of visible and hidden stems, not from Na Yin names. The Fire Na Yin label does not add to either total. In Chart A, the Fire count comes from hidden Bing in the day branch and hidden Bing in the hour branch, not from the Lamp Fire label on the month. In Chart B, the Fire count includes hidden Ding in the year branch and hidden Ding in the hour branch. Labels describe pairs; totals describe weighted stems. Keep the two ledgers separate.

五 Worked chart examples

Calendar-screened teaching charts, not client biographies. Both use a Jia Yang Wood Day Master. Each has exactly one Fire Na Yin label, at the position identified in the explanation; actual element stems are counted separately.

Weighted element totals: Wood 3.5, Fire 1.5, Earth 2.9, Metal 1.5, Water 1.8.

Chart A has pillars 壬申 in the year, 甲辰 in the month, 甲寅 on the day, and 己巳 in the hour, with Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master. The target Fire Na Yin is Lamp Fire (覆灯火), carried by the month pillar 甲辰. The month stem is Jia Wood, a Friend to the Day Master. The month branch is Chen Earth, which hides Wu Earth as Indirect Wealth at weight 1, Yi Wood as Rob Wealth at weight 0.5, and Gui Water as Direct Resource at weight 0.3. No Fire stem is visible in this column, and no Fire appears among its hidden stems. The column's stem element is Wood and its branch element is Earth.

The chart's actual Fire element total is 1.5. That figure comes from hidden Bing Fire elsewhere: weight 0.5 in the day branch Yin and weight 1 in the hour branch Si. The Lamp Fire label on the month pillar does not contribute to this total and does not convert Jia Wood or Chen Earth into Fire. One decisive check is to read the month column's stem and hidden stems directly: Jia over Chen with Wu, Yi, and Gui hidden. Another is to trace the 1.5 Fire total to its actual sources rather than to the Na Yin name. The label identifies the pair; the weighted stems supply the count.

Here the month pair Jia Chen carries Lamp Fire, yet its stem is Jia Wood and its hidden stems are Wu, Yi, and Gui, with no Fire among them. The 1.5 Fire total instead traces to hidden Bing in the day branch Yin and the hour branch Si.

Weighted element totals: Wood 3, Fire 1.3, Earth 1.8, Metal 1.5, Water 2.5.

Chart B has pillars 壬午 in the year, 癸卯 in the month, 甲申 on the day, and 甲戌 in the hour, with Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master. The target Fire Na Yin is Mountain-Top Fire (山头火), carried by the hour pillar 甲戌. The hour stem is Jia Wood, a Friend to the Day Master. The hour branch is Xu Earth, which hides Wu Earth as Indirect Wealth at weight 1, Xin Metal as Direct Officer at weight 0.5, and Ding Fire as Hurting Officer at weight 0.3. Ding Fire genuinely appears among the hidden stems here, unlike Chart A's target column.

Here the hour pair Jia Xu carries Mountain-Top Fire, and Xu hides Ding Fire at weight 0.3. The 1.3 Fire total draws on hidden Ding in the year branch Wu and this hour Ding.

Comparing the two charts pillar by pillar: the year pillars differ (壬申 versus 壬午), the month pillars differ (甲辰 versus 癸卯), the day pillars differ (甲寅 versus 甲申), and the hour pillars differ (己巳 versus 甲戌). No whole pillar is unchanged between the two charts. The Day Master is Jia in both. The target Fire Na Yin sits at the month in Chart A and at the hour in Chart B, each at its shown position. Chart B's Fire total is 1.3, drawn from hidden Ding in the year branch Wu and hidden Ding in the hour branch Xu. A practical reader check is to open each target column and read its stem and hidden stems before comparing totals. For the weighting method behind those hidden-stem figures, see the hidden stems and their weights.

六 What the counts mean

This Fire group contains six Na Yin names covering twelve of the sixty sexagenary-cycle entries. Each name belongs to two adjacent cycle entries. These are lookup-table counts, not a population distribution or a probability of any life outcome. They do not describe how much Fire is present in a chart’s weighted element totals.

Calculation reference: the calendar library’s Na Yin mapping. Chinese labels follow the verified table; English names are editorial glosses. No Na Yin element is added to the calculator’s stem-based totals.
