Friend vs Rob Wealth in Bazi: Same Element Does Not Mean the Same Ten God

一 What is the difference?

What Friend and Rob Wealth Mean

Friend and Rob Wealth are the two Companion ten gods: the same element as the Day Master. For Jia Yang Wood, Jia is Friend and Yi Yin Wood is Rob Wealth. Same element, opposite polarity. The visible day stem is the Day Master itself, never counted as Friend; hidden Jia and other visible Jia are counted. For the underlying framework, see The Ten Gods in Bazi: A Clear Guide to the Five Relationships and Two Polarities.

Think of two people holding the same kind of tool: one works beside you on a shared project, the other reaches for the same materials you are using.

  • Friend (same polarity): traditional association is shared footing, peer identification, working alongside equals.
  • Rob Wealth (opposite polarity): traditional association is negotiating shared resources, competing claims, dividing what is jointly held.

These labels describe a relationship pattern, not fixed outcomes. A chart can show both without implying theft, betrayal, or loss. Read the actual hidden stems before citing any number; a hidden Jia contributes Friend, and weights reflect list position, not inherent strength. See Friend and Rob Wealth.

二 Where to find each in your chart

Where to Read Friend and Rob Wealth

Open https://bazi-calculator.org/, enter birth date, time, and place; if the hour is unknown, choose “I don’t know the hour.” Read the Four Pillars Day stem first: that is the Day Master. Then read the labels for the non-day visible stems and the hidden stems inside each branch.

Each pillar has a top stem, a bottom branch, and hidden characters within that branch. The top stem is visible; the branch is the earthly layer; hidden stems are the branch’s internal components. For Jia Yang Wood, a visible Jia is Friend, while a visible Yi is Rob Wealth. A hidden Jia also contributes Friend; the visible Day Master is not counted as Friend.

Labels depend on the Day Master. The same other stem gets a different label under a different Day Master because the ten gods are defined relative to that day stem. Traditional associations: Friend suggests shared footing; Rob Wealth suggests negotiating shared resources. These are interpretive, not predictions.

甲 → Friend; 乙 → Rob Wealth. Exclude only the visible Day Master from the totals below.

三 How to read the pair

How to Compare Friend and Rob Wealth

Begin with the element relationship, then apply polarity. For a Jia Yang Wood Day Master, scan every stem in the Four Pillars. Any Jia or Yi stem shares Wood with the Day Master and belongs to the Companion family. Polarity then splits the family: Jia Yang Wood is Friend, while Yi Yin Wood is Rob Wealth. The table below generalizes this: each row pairs the Day Master with its same-element first and second stems, so the same two-step test works for every Day Master.

Next, distinguish root visibility. A stem can appear visibly in a pillar or only as a hidden stem inside a branch. Both count, but they are recorded separately. In the first example chart, Friend shows one visible Jia in the month, while Rob Wealth shows no visible stem and two hidden Yi, in the month and hour. In the second chart, Friend shows two hidden Jia, while Rob Wealth shows two visible Yi plus one hidden Yi.

Then count in two ways. The visible count tallies only stems on the surface. The weighted count adds hidden stems by their list position, using 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3, while every other visible stem is 1.0. These weights are positional, not measures of inherent strength. Critically, exclude only the visible Day Master itself; hidden Jia and other visible Jia are still counted as Friend. In the first chart, the visible Day Master is not added to Friend, yet the month Jia is.

Read the components before citing any number. The first chart gives Friend 1 and Rob Wealth 0.8; the second gives Friend 2 and Rob Wealth 2.3. These totals describe presence and distribution, not strong or weak. A larger count does not mean a stronger Day Master, and a zero does not mean a personal deficit. Season is judged from the month branch, never inferred from these counts.

Finally, treat the labels as traditional associations: Friend with shared footing and peer identification, Rob Wealth with negotiating shared resources or competing claims. They are not shensha stars, and they do not predict friends, theft, betrayal, loss, or conflict. For the full Companion family, see Friend and Rob Wealth.

For Jia Wood, a visible Jia on another stem is Friend, while a visible Yi is Rob Wealth, yet the same visible stem can sit over a branch hiding the other label, so one pillar is not a single undivided ten-god label. Annotate two layers separately: first label the visible stem, then label the hidden stem in the branch, keeping the Day Master as the reference for both. A visible Day Master is labelled Day Master, not counted as Friend; other visible or hidden Jia counts as Friend. This reproducible distinction prevents collapsing Friend and Rob Wealth into one pillar label.

四 When the comparison changes

Visible versus hidden

A Bazi Calculator separates what is plainly on the stems from what sits inside the branches. For a Jia Day Master, a visible Jia on the month stem is Friend, while a hidden Jia inside a branch is also Friend but enters the weighted tally at the position weight of that hidden list. The first example chart shows this split: Friend appears once visibly, yet Rob Wealth appears only as hidden Yi in the month and hour branches. Checking visible counts alone would report Friend 1 and Rob Wealth 0; checking hidden stems adds the Yi components. The traditional association of Friend is shared footing and peer identification, while Rob Wealth is negotiating shared resources or competing claims. Read both layers before drawing any conclusion, because a label can be present in the branches without any visible stem.

One versus both

Finding one of the two companion labels is not the same as finding both. In the second example, Rob Wealth is visible twice and also hidden once, while Friend is hidden twice. The visible tally shows Friend 0 and Rob Wealth 2; the weighted tally shows Friend 2 and Rob Wealth 2.3. Neither total is a verdict on strength. The traditional contrast treats Friend as identification with peers and Rob Wealth as managing shared claims, but these are interpretive associations, not predictions about loyalty, loss, or conflict. When both labels appear, note which layer carries them and whether the visible Day Master is being counted. The Day Master is never counted as Friend in these totals; only other visible Jia and hidden Jia contribute.

Numerical weighting versus actual strength

Weights of 1.0, 0.5, and 0.3 apply to hidden list positions, while all other visible stems count 1.0. These numbers organize the calculation; they are not inherent strength. A hidden Jia at weight 1.0 in the year branch and a visible Yi at weight 1.0 on the month stem can produce similar totals while occupying very different positions. In the first example, Indirect Wealth reaches 3.0 through three hidden Wu components, yet that quantity alone does not make the chart weak or strong. Compare the weighted companion totals with the visible companion totals, then read the hidden-stem components directly. If a label is absent from the visible stems but present in the hidden list, the weighted method will show it while the visible method will not. That difference is a prompt to inspect the branches, not to assign a personal deficit.

Positions and unknown hour

Position changes what a companion label can be associated with. A visible Jia on the month stem is a different placement from a hidden Jia in the hour branch, and the hour branch is unavailable when the birth hour is unknown. In that case, any Friend or Rob Wealth component listed under the hour slot cannot be confirmed. The first example places hidden Yi in the hour branch at weight 0.3; without a known hour, that contribution is uncertain. The second example places visible Yi on the hour stem and hidden Ji on the hour branch, so an unknown hour removes both from the observable chart. Traditional readings associate the hour with later-life or outcome sectors, but that association is interpretive. Use the calculator to list the Four Pillars and hidden stems, mark which slots are unknown, and compare the remaining visible and weighted companion counts without treating the missing hour as evidence of anything.

五 Worked chart examples

These teaching charts were screened from the calendar engine. They do not describe clients or assert life events. Visible counts and hidden-stem weighted totals agree on the numerical emphasis in each example; neither is an overall strength verdict.

Chart A — 壬戌 / 甲辰 / 甲戌 / 辛未
Position year month day hour
Stem 壬 甲 甲 辛
Branch 戌 辰 戌 未
Ten god Indirect Resource Friend Day Master Direct Officer
Hidden stems 戊 Indirect Wealth (1)

戊 Indirect Wealth (1)
辛 Direct Officer (0.5)
丁 Hurting Officer (0.3)
己 Direct Wealth (1)
丁 Hurting Officer (0.5)
乙 Rob Wealth (0.3)

Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Friend 1.0; Rob Wealth 0.8; Hurting Officer 1.1; Indirect Wealth 3.0; Direct Wealth 1.0; Direct Officer 2.0; Indirect Resource 1.0; Direct Resource 0.3.

Visible non-day stems — Friend: 1; Rob Wealth: 0.

Chart A uses Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master, shown in the day pillar. In the Four Pillars view, the visible day stem is the Day Master itself and is not counted as Friend. The month stem Jia is visible and therefore contributes Friend at weight 1.0. Hidden stems add two Rob Wealth entries: Yi in the month hidden list at weight 0.5, and Yi in the hour hidden list at weight 0.3. No other visible or hidden Jia or Yi appears in the supplied components.

Comparing the pair, the visible count is Friend 1 and Rob Wealth 0. The weighted count is Friend 1.0 and Rob Wealth 0.8. This is a mild numerical emphasis toward Friend in the weighted comparison, not a statement about overall strength or weakness. The Day Master remains outside the Friend total, while the hidden Jia in other charts would count; here only the month Jia is counted.

Exact relationships in Chart A

  • Month stem Jia and Day Master Jia: same element and same polarity, so the visible month Jia is Friend. It is the only visible Friend component.
  • Month hidden Yi and hour hidden Yi: both are Rob Wealth. Their weights are 0.5 and 0.3 by hidden list position, giving the 0.8 total.
  • Visible Friend versus hidden Rob Wealth: the visible layer shows one Friend and no Rob Wealth, while the hidden layer supplies both Rob Wealth entries. This contrast explains why visible and weighted counts differ.

Traditionally, Friend is associated with peer identification and shared footing, while Rob Wealth is associated with negotiating shared resources or competing claims. These are interpretive associations, not predictions. For further definitions, see Friend and Rob Wealth.

Weighted ten-god totals (excluding only the visible Day Master stem): Friend 2.0; Rob Wealth 2.3; Eating God 2.0; Hurting Officer 0.5; Indirect Wealth 0.6; Direct Wealth 2.0; Direct Officer 0.3; Direct Resource 0.5.

Visible non-day stems — Friend: 0; Rob Wealth: 2.

Chart B: Hidden Friend, Visible Rob Wealth

Chart B (丙寅, 乙未, 甲寅, 乙丑) has Jia Yang Wood as the Day Master. Its Friend components are both hidden Jia: year branch 寅 and day branch 寅, each weight 1, totaling 2. Its Rob Wealth components are month stem 乙 (visible, 1), month branch 未 hidden 乙 (0.3), and hour stem 乙 (visible, 1), totaling 2.3. Rob Wealth therefore outweighs Friend, and both Yi stems sit visibly at month and hour.

Chart A (壬戌, 甲辰, 甲戌, 辛未) reverses this. Friend is the visible month stem 甲, weight 1. Rob Wealth is hidden 乙 in month branch 辰 (0.5) and hour branch 未 (0.3), totaling 0.8. Here Friend outweighs Rob Wealth, and the Jia is visible while the Yi stays hidden.

Why the Reversal Happens

Position changes first. In A, Jia occupies a visible month stem; in B, Jia appears only inside 寅 branches. In B, Yi occupies visible month and hour stems; in A, Yi appears only inside 辰 and 未. Layer changes follow. Visible stems carry weight 1.0; hidden stems carry 1.0, 0.5, or 0.3 by list position. A's visible Jia gives Friend a clean 1.0, while its hidden Yi yields 0.8. B's hidden Jia yields 2.0, but its two visible Yi plus one hidden Yi yield 2.3. Emphasis reverses because A emphasizes Friend through visibility, while B emphasizes Rob Wealth through both visibility and a higher weighted total. The same two labels appear in both charts, yet neither quantity nor visibility alone decides which is emphasized.

Traditionally, Friend is associated with shared footing and peer identification, while Rob Wealth is associated with negotiating shared resources or competing claims. These are interpretive associations, not predictions about friends, theft, betrayal, loss, or conflict.

六 How often do the two labels coexist?

Within the 51,840 combinations whose Day Master is Jia 甲, presence means at least one matching visible non-day stem or hidden stem. This conditional subset contains 60 year pillars × 12 solar-month slots × 6 Jia day pillars × 12 hour slots, with valid derived stems. It is not the full 518,400-combination space for all Day Masters.

Configuration Combinations Proportion
Neither 2,512 4.8457%
Friend only 9,283 17.9070%
Rob Wealth only 13,688 26.4043%
Both 26,357 50.8430%

These are equal-weight combination-space proportions, not percentages of people, income outcomes, personality types or birth-registry frequencies. A hidden occurrence counts as presence even when no matching stem is visible above the branches. Only the visible Day Master is excluded. Repeated occurrences do not increase the number of charts counted.

Calculate your chart, identify your Day Master, and compare the visible and hidden occurrences before interpreting either label.
