一 What it is
What the Yi You Day Pillar Means
The Yi You day pillar is a 乙 Day Master sitting on a 酉 branch whose only hidden stem is 辛, the Seven Killings relative to Yi, while Yi itself stands in the Extinction phase at You. Think of a young vine trained against a metal trellis: the frame is rigid and close, yet it gives the vine something exact to climb. That is the plain picture — a soft Wood stem meeting a branch of pure, fine Metal.
What distinguishes this pillar is how narrow its hidden contents are. You hides Xin alone, so the branch carries no Wood root and no Water resource for Yi; Wood appears as the visible Day Master in A and as the Day Master plus a month-stem peer in B; neither chart has hidden Wood. Extinction here is a stem-branch lookup reference, not a verdict of weakness or doom, and Seven Killings is not automatically violence, a partner threat, or guaranteed authority. The real question is scope: one branch's pure Metal is not the same as a whole chart dominated by Metal. In chart A, Water resource is abundant and Metal is heavy; in chart B, Fire is prominent and Water is thin. Both keep 乙 as the Day Master, so the Ten Gods stay relative to Yi, and the phase reference is read from the standard table rather than treated as a score, health signal, or prediction.
二 Where to find it in your chart
Where to Read Yi You in Your Chart
Open your Four Pillars grid and find the Day column: the top character is the Day Master stem, and the bottom character is the day branch. In this article both teaching charts show 乙 on top and 酉 below, so the Day Master is 乙 while the day pillar is the full pair 乙酉. Hidden stems appear as small characters inside the branch cell; for 酉 the only hidden stem is 辛, labeled Seven Killings relative to 乙.
The main grid has no dedicated growth-phase row. To check the Extinction phase, use the article's phase tables or the full overview, reading it as a stem-branch lookup rather than a score, health marker, or prediction. Element balance totals are fixed calculator weights, not season-adjusted strength units, and they do not replace the separate Day Master strength estimate. If the hour is unknown, treat it as unconfirmed; near a day boundary, calculate your chart with an accurate birthplace and time instead of assuming a universal rollover rule.
三 How to read it
How to Read Yi You in Four Layers
Start with the cycle index, not the Ten Gods. 乙酉 is the twenty-second stem-branch pair in the sixty-term sequence, and its legal pairing works because both 乙 and 酉 carry yin polarity. That index tells you where the pillar sits in the repeating cycle; it does not tell you what the branch hides or how strong the Day Master is. Keep this layer separate from interpretation, because a cycle position is a coordinate, not a verdict. The same 乙酉 pair can appear in a year, month, day, or hour column, and its role changes with position even though the hidden contents do not.
Next, fix the stem element and polarity before naming any Ten God. Here 乙 is yin Wood, so every hidden stem in 酉 must be read relative to 乙, not relative to 甲. 酉 hides only 辛, yin Metal, which is 乙's Seven Killings. That label describes the control relationship between yin Wood and yin Metal; it does not mean violence, a partner threat, or guaranteed authority. A single hidden stem with weight 1 is the entire hidden content of this branch. There is no hidden Wood root and no hidden Water resource inside 酉, so 乙 finds no support or resource stored in its own day branch.
Then read the phase as a separate lookup. Under the phase convention used here, 乙 at 酉 is 绝, Extinction, and the pillar stem 乙 also sits at 绝 in this branch. Extinction is a stage in the twelve-phase cycle, not a score, health reading, biological age, or prediction. It does not automatically mean weakness or doom. To see how the branch works across the chart, compare it with the you rooster earthly branch reference, then check whether other branches supply Wood roots or Water resource.
Finally, read the complete chart. In example A, 壬申, 壬子, 乙酉, 辛巳 gives strong Water resource and visible 辛 Seven Killings, while example B, 壬午, 乙巳, 乙酉, 辛巳, shows more Fire and a visible 乙 peer. In A, the visible Yi is the Day Master itself; B adds a month-stem Yi peer. Neither chart contains hidden Wood, which is required for a Wood root. Metal dominance belongs to the whole chart, not to 酉 alone. Weigh hidden Ten Gods, phase, roots, resource, and visible stems together before drawing any conclusion.
To place this pair within the sexagenary cycle, use the ordered table in the sixty Jia Zi cycle; its number identifies a position, not a rank.
| Hidden stem | Ten God relative to Yi | Calculator weight |
|---|---|---|
| 辛 | Seven Killings | 1 |
| Day pillar | Cycle index | Yi phase at day branch |
|---|---|---|
| 乙酉 | 22 | 绝 Extinction |
四 When the reading changes
What the Yi You Day Pillar Actually Contains
乙酉 is the twenty-second pillar in the sixty-term cycle. Its branch 酉 holds a single hidden stem, 辛, which reads as Seven Killings relative to the 乙 Day Master. There is no hidden Wood and no hidden Water inside 酉, so the branch offers the Day Master neither a root nor a resource. The phase lookup places 乙 at Extinction in 酉, while using hidden Xin as a different reference gives Adulthood at You. That label comes from a fixed stem-branch table, not from a strength score, health reading, or forecast. It describes where the stem stands in its own growth sequence, nothing more. Because 酉 hides only 辛, the pure reading of this branch is narrow: one Metal influence, expressed through the Seven Killings lens. Whether that Metal actually dominates depends on the whole chart, not on this pillar alone.
How Season and Support Change the Reading
In example A, the month is 子 and two 壬 stems sit in year and month, so Water resource is abundant even though 酉 itself supplies none. The Day Master draws support from outside the day branch, and the Metal of 酉 and 辛巳 meets that Water rather than standing unopposed. In example B, the month is 巳 and the only Water is the year stem 壬, while Fire and Metal both carry weight. Here the same 乙酉 sits in a warmer, drier setting, and the visible 乙 in the month is a peer, not a hidden Wood root. Neither chart hides Wood inside 酉, so any Wood support must come from elsewhere in the structure. Reading Extinction as automatic weakness ignores this difference; reading Seven Killings as guaranteed conflict ignores it too.
Relationship and Career Limits of This Reading
Because 酉 hides only 辛, the Seven Killings theme is the sole hidden content of the day branch. That can color how partnership or authority is framed, but it does not promise a threatening partner, a domineering boss, or a violent outcome. The extinction jue growth phase marks a position in the stem cycle, not a verdict on marriage or employment. Career reflection can use pressure or discipline as traditional metaphors, but this pillar does not establish where those experiences occur, name a profession, or predict a promotion. The two examples show how differently the same day pillar behaves once season, resource, and surrounding Metal are weighed.
Root Versus Visible Peer
Neither complete example contains hidden Wood. In A, Yi is only the Day Master; B adds visible Yi in the month. That changes the stem layer without adding a root. Check every branch rather than counting visible peers as roots. Water resource remains a separate form of support in this terminology.

Chart A: Yi Sitting on You
In Chart A the day pillar is 乙酉: Yi Wood rests directly on You Metal. You is a pure Metal branch whose only hidden stem is Xin, and for a Yi Day Master that Xin is Seven Killings. Nothing else is stored in the branch — no hidden Wood root and no hidden Water resource. The only visible Yi is the Day Master; none of the four branches hides Wood. The two 壬 stems and the 子 branch supply strong Water, but that resource sits in the year and month, not inside the day branch.
The day stem's phase at You is Extinction (Jue). This is a stem-branch lookup: Yi meets You at the extinction position in the reference table. It describes the Day Master's phase at that branch, not a health reading, a biological age, or a prediction. Extinction does not automatically mean weakness or doom, and Seven Killings does not automatically mean violence, a partner threat, or guaranteed authority.
Two contrasts sharpen the reading. First, the hidden Xin is a single, pure content of the branch, which is different from whole-chart Metal dominance — here Metal also appears through the hour stem 辛 and the 申 and 巳 branches, so the label "You hides Xin" should not be stretched into a claim about the entire chart. Second, Yi at You is Extinction for both the Day Master and its own pillar stem. Using hidden Xin as a separate reference gives Adulthood at You; Xin is not this day pillar's stem. The same branch therefore carries different phase values depending on which stem is referenced.
| Position | Year | Month | Day | Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 壬 | 乙 | 乙 | 辛 |
| Branch | 午 | 巳 | 酉 | 巳 |
| Ten God | Direct Resource | Friend | Day Master | Seven Killings |

丙 Hurting Officer (1) 庚 Direct Officer (0.5) 戊 Direct Wealth (0.3) |

| Yi Day Master phase | 长生 Birth | 沐浴 Bath | 绝 Extinction | 沐浴 Bath |
| Own pillar stem phase | 胎 Conception | 沐浴 Bath | 绝 Extinction | 死 Death |
Weighted element totals: Wood 2, Fire 3, Earth 1.1, Metal 3, Water 1.
Chart B: Same Day Pillar, Different Surroundings
Chart B keeps 乙 as the actual Day Master and the same 乙酉 day pillar, so the hidden Xin Metal remains a lone Seven Killings inside You, and Yi still sits in the Extinction phase. What changes is the year branch and month pillar. The year is now 壬午, the month 乙巳, and the hour 辛巳. Compared with chart A, the second visible 壬 and the 子 Water resource are absent; the month stem is a visible 乙 Friend rather than Direct Resource, and the month and hour branches are 巳 Fire, while the year branch is 午.
That visible 乙 peer is not a hidden Wood root. Roots must hide the same element as the actual Day Master, so only Wood hidden in a branch would count for Yi; a visible stem of the same element does not. None of chart B’s branches hides Wood, and the only Water is the year stem 壬, which has no hidden Water support beneath it. Meanwhile Fire is strongly represented through 午 and the two 巳, and Metal remains present through 酉 and the hour 辛. This is a different balance from chart A, where Water and Metal dominated and Fire was thinner.
The Extinction phase is a stem-branch lookup, not a verdict on strength, health, or outcome. It does not automatically mean weakness or doom, and the Seven Killings label does not guarantee violence, partner threat, or authority. Read the hidden Xin as one component, then weigh the whole chart's Metal contribution separately.
To check your own chart, first confirm the day stem is 乙 and the day branch 酉. Then list every branch and ask whether it hides Wood; if none does, the day pillar has no hidden root regardless of visible 乙 stems. Finally, compare total Metal against Water and Fire before drawing conclusions. For a contrasting branch pattern, see the yi hai day pillar.
六 What the counts mean
The ordered cycle contains 60 distinct pairs. Each stem appears in six of them. A specific day pillar occupies one of those 60 positions. These counts describe the cycle, not a measured population distribution or a probability of any life outcome.
